书育人，既体现了教师工作的专业化特征，又反映出了对师德的极高要求。无疑，教师工作是专业特征十分突出的、不可任意替代的、具有丰富内涵的工作：
一、要具备高尚的思想品德素质。
教师的人格形象对学生是无形却又是最有力的教育，是一种“不求而至，不为而成”的潜移默化、润物无声的最有效的教育。教师的职业性质决定了教师不可能成为经济上的富翁，但可以成为精神上的富有者，成为受社会尊敬的人。教师应注重自我精神、情操的提升和陶冶，具备强烈的事业心和责任感，爱岗敬业，乐于奉献，崇尚事业胜于物质生活。当老师的应兼教怎样做人，率先垂范，为人师表。
二、要具备专业理论和科研能力素质。
一个好的教师，应有精深博新的专业知识。特别是大学教师，他们不但应是本学科的集大成者，还应是研究者、思想者、创造者。能成为研究者、思想者、创造者，是“学而不厌”、“研而不厌”、“思而不厌”的结果。
专业基础知识、专业理论水平和科学研究能力是教师从事教学工作的基本素质，是教师提高教学质量、培养杰出人才的基本保证。“科学研究应当走在教学的前面”，教师致力于科研可以为教学提供最新的研究成果，可以增强教学内容的'理论深度和新度。
三、要具备人文科学知识与自然科学知识兼容并蓄的知识结构素质。
对于教师来说，博学多识是做一个好教师应具备的素质。作为21世纪的高校教师更应力求博学多识，不断完善自己的知识结构。随着科学技术日新月异的发展，学科间相互渗透、交叉互动愈益明显，教学工作正面临着的挑战。教师只有具备完善的知识结构，才能为专业理论知识的教授奠定雄厚的根基，使自己的教学内容达到深度与广度的统一。
四、要具备师范性素质。
它包括三个层面：知识层面。除了上述专业理论知识及相关的人文科学知识、自然科学知识外，教师还应通晓教育基本理论，如教育学、心理学及有关学科教学法的理论知识，并运用这些理论来指导教学实践，努力探索、掌握教学规律，从而不断提高教学水平。能力层面。教师的基本能力包括设计操作能力、组织管理能力、课堂讲授能力、语言表达能力、书写能力、运用现代化教育手段的能力、开拓创新能力。心理品质层面。教师优雅庄重的外在形象，与其内在的知识修养、心理品质密切相关。
对于广大教师来说，最为重要的就是提高自己的师德。
第一， 教师要以德修身。汉代学者杨雄说：“师者，人之模范。”教师是人类灵魂的工程师，作为一名教师不修身怎么能行？当前师德教育特别要强调树立远大理想，热爱教育事业，全心全意为党的教育事业作奉献，要努力克服个人主义、拜金主义、享乐主义等不良思想的影响。
第二， 教师要以德育人。以德育人，是教师对社会应尽的道德义务，也是教师对社会作贡献的主要内容。能否自觉地做到以德育人，是衡量教师道德水准高低的重要标志。古今中外的教育家都十分重视通过教书育人达到以德育人。教育家苏霍姆林斯基说：“请你记住，你不仅是自己学科的教员，而且是学生的教育者、生活的导师和道德的引路人。
